Introducing the Freedom in Africa Report (F[in]AR)

Last month, the Liberalist Centre launched the Freedom in Africa Report (F[in]AR), a continent-focused index assessing the state of political freedom, economic liberty, and human prosperity across African countries. The report, unveiled at the Conference of Freedom Advocates (CFA) held in Abuja on October 25th, provides data-driven insights and actionable policy recommendations designed to promote liberty and good governance throughout the continent.

Speaking on the report, Abdullah Tijani, Executive Director of the Centre, described F(in)AR as a bold step toward measuring what truly matters for Africa’s progress: the freedom of her people. He emphasised that while many African nations have achieved democratic transitions, the continent continues to face deep structural barriers that limit individual liberty, enterprise, and accountability.

This report challenges policymakers, scholars, and reform advocates to reimagine governance through the lens of liberty. Africa cannot prosper if Africans are not free to speak, to trade, to move, and to dream without restriction,” said Tijani.

F[in]AR examines key indicators, including the rule of law, property rights, regulatory freedom, media independence, and personal autonomy. Through country-by-country analysis, it ranks nations based on how conducive their systems are to the protection and promotion of freedom. The 2025 edition provides a comprehensive overview of the state of freedom in Africa, identifying progress, setbacks, and opportunities for reform.
